About
Life is a beautiful thing; a gift that cannot be replaced. From a young age, I realized that one of the best ways to preserve memories and seize authentic moments, was to capture them behind the lens of a camera. My journey into becoming a professional photographer and videographer has been what I decribe as a progressive revelation.
Whenever I pause to take a glance back, I can see that the visual medium has always been present in my life. It was and still is continually threaded into every single aspect of my life. Growing up in Southern California, my mother spent a lot of time taking pictures of our family as well as capturing camping and national park visits behind the lens of Canon. My dad took photography class in high school, learned to develop film, and took surf and car photos. My sister took a photography class in college that led to some prints on the walls of our home. This was just a hint at what was to come for me. I always brought a digital camera with me to moto days on the dirt bike with my Dad and friends, to the beach to photograph and film surfing, and to other action sports and adventuring days in National Parks and other wild places on the West Coast. A greater devotion to the craft came during my time in the Army, stationed in interior Alaska, where my eyes were opened wide in wonderment, as I began to see the beauty, majesty, and mystery that its landscapes held.
One of the ways that I learned best in school growing up was to sit, allowing time to “slow down” if you will, allowing a subject to be freeze-framed before me, to learn the most I could about it. This allowed more depths of meaning to come to the surface, more time to dwell on its fullness and composition, as well as the various textures. This has not changed for me over the years; this kind of learning has benefitted me greatly, especially in the realm of photography. In a “doom scroll” society that we currently live in, I believe that photos are more essential than ever, maybe even just as a hint to the human soul, to slow, down.
This essentially has been my life journey as a photographer: a journey of still shots in motion. Some of these moments need more attention to detail, where we can slow down together and abide deeper in the moment, allowing our eyes to fully capture the emotion, the beauty, and the life of these gifts from God. That has been my heart as a photographer through the years.
After purchasing my first DSLR camera in 2014, I was compelled with a burning passion to explore and grow in the craft of landscape and outdoor photography. Although counterintuitive, there is a tranquility, as well as a rush of adrenaline that takes place behind the lens every time I step on location, and I don’t think that will ever change. Capturing photos and filming can be a rather technical experience, and although I enjoy the technical piece, there is a storytelling aspect and journey that takes place every session which is unlike any other.
Thank you for taking the time to read a bit of background about my journey behind the lens over the years and I hope to connect with you soon through a workshop, photo tour, or feel free to drop me a line through my contact page. See you out there!
